THE FACE OF THE CUFFLINKS ARE ENAMELED.THE AUTHENTIC SENATE CUFFLINKS MEASURE APPROXIMATELY 7/8" IN DIAMETER. THEY WERE OBTAINED AT A MEETING WITH THE SENATOR DEALING WITH CIVIL RIGHTS. THOSE FORTUNATE ENOUGH TO ATTEND THE MEETING WERE GIVEN THE SENATE CUFFLINKS; ON THE BACK OF THE PIN ARE THE WORDS: "THANKS MAC MATHIAS ."
    Charles McCurdy "Mac" Mathias Jr. was an American politician and attorney. A Republican, he served as a member of the United States Senate, representing Maryland from 1969 to 1987. He was also a member of the Maryland House of Delegates from 1959 to 1960, and of the United States House of Representatives, representing the 6th congressional district of Maryland from 1961 to 1969.
    Mathias also established a record on civil rights, having played an important role in passing a fair housing bill while he was in the House, and also in establishing a national holiday for Martin Luther King Jr
