This is a postcard signed by
Margaret Chase Smith.
Margaret Madeline Chase Smith (1897-1995)
was an American politician from Maine.
A member of the Republican Party, she
served as both a U.S. representative from
1940 to 1949, and then as a U.S. senator
from 1949 to 1973.  She was the first
woman to serve in both houses of the
United States Congress, and the first
woman to represent Maine in either.
Smith was a candidate for the Republican
nomination in the 1964 presidential election;
she was the first woman to be placed in
nomination for the presidency at a major
party's convention.
Upon leaving office, she was the longest
serving female senator in history.
The signature is on a 3" by 5" postcard.
